Bowie is a purebred Miniature Pony, he was orphaned at only 6 weeks of age. I (Amy) took him on as a companion pony with expectations of him to grow full size, coming home at only 22kg this was debatable. A few weeks went by of trying to get him onto foal milk replacer via bottle/bucket/mash etc but it was clear that Bowie was quite content grazing (grass/hay/pellets) like a mature pony, objecting to any form of milk replacer put in front of him, soon af...ter it was becoming increasingly obvious he had signs of equine dwarfism.
Within the initial weeks Bowie's front legs were growing in a somewhat deformed way... this was alarming to me (being a vet nurse for 9 years) so i soon took him into the University of Melbourne Equine Hospital to seek help from a specialist farrier Dr. Luke Wells-Smith. With weeks of treatment from his (and my) favourite vet Dr. Charlie El-hage (equine medicine specialist), radiographs and tiny tiny glue on shoes specially made from thin chopping board (he was too small for anything else too heavy) we finally started to see correction in the angle of this legs. HOORAY! Throughout this time there were stages where Bowie was quite uncomfortable, Janine from Muscles & More was a great assistance in helping relieve the stress on the poor little mans muscles that were all changing to suit the angles of his legs. Bowie continued to travel (in the back of my car) to work with me everyday at the vet hospital for close monitoring of his poor legs.
Bowie is now 7 months old weighing in at 38kg, a height of 60cm and what a little ripper he is. Please follow his page for updates of his service to the community, pictures and videos of his everyday happy straight legged living. He is now one happy extremely loved pony that's giving something back.
